Early signs of a communication disorder may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Speech that is difficult to understand

  • Speech that contains sound errors

  • Limited vocabulary

  • Does not combine two or more words

  • Uses more gestures than words to communicate

  • Difficulty following directions and recalling information

  • Produces grammatically incorrect sentences

  • Difficulty producing speech (child appears to struggle)

  • Frequent repetition of sounds or words

  • Limited eye contact

  • Difficulty maintaining the topic of conversation
